Sudoku is one of the most popular logic puzzles in the world. While the mathematical concept of Latin squares dates back to the 18th century, the modern 9×9 format with 3×3 sub-regions (boxes) was introduced by Howard Garns (USA). Under the original name “Number Place,” the puzzle first appeared in 1979 in Dell Magazines.
The puzzle gained global recognition after Maki Kaji (Japan) introduced the name 数独 (Sudoku) in 1992, derived from the phrase 数字は独身に限る, meaning “numbers must remain single”. In Sudoku, each row, column, and 3×3 box must contain all digits without repetition, creating a clean deduction structure that has inspired countless variants and competitions worldwide.
